Closing date approaching for work place netball league

The closing date (Tuesday, 21 May) for the latest ‘Let’s Get Telford Active’ activity – the workplace netball challenge, is fast approaching.

The event has been funded by Telford & Wrekin Council and developed by England Netball for people looking to get fit, brush up on team working skills and have some fun.

Netball is a great social sport typically burning around 450 calories per session. It’s also a great way to strengthen friendships, support team building and to improve muscle tone.

Ruth Hughes, development officer for Netball England said: "This league is an ideal opportunity to join in with a really exciting and fun sport.

"Squads of ten usually play which works out at just £10 per player for six weeks of matches which is great value and it doesn't really matter if you have never played either.

"There will be plenty of people on hand to go over the rules and if you’d like a bit of pre-match training you can pop along to the Back to Netball session 6-7pm beforehand to get you started. You just need a pair of trainers.

"You can’t chat to a treadmill and with netball before you know it, you have done an hour of exercise and shared the experience with friends, there really is nothing like it for me.”

Councillor Andy Burford, Cabinet Member for health and social care, said: "The ‘Let’s Get Telford Active’ events are such a positive thing for people living in the borough as there will be something for all ages, abilities and interests.

"We’re so lucky to have such enthusiastic groups willing to take up the challenge of boosting activity levels in Telford by hosting these events. Being active improves your physical health, happiness and helps people make friends.

"Aside from having fun, the workplace netball challenge will help improve mental health, reduce workplace sickness, and even offer new networking opportunities within organisations.”

The league will be played in Dawley at the Phoenix Sports and Leisure Centre (Langley School) between 7-9pm and teams are mixed.

Match nights will be Mondays from June 3 through to July 8 with a trophy awarded to the winning team.

Places are limited and the closing date for league entry is Tuesday, 21 May, click here to purchase tickets.

The council’s £50,000 Get Telford Active fund is supporting more than 20 projects led by the community, taking place over the next year.

Each event aims to provide a fun and friendly way for people to get involved in physical activity if they are out of practice – or even for people to get active for the first time. To find out more visit the Healthy Telford website.
